Tues 5th April 2016
Cry me a river Rob (I've recorded the base "on top" of the piano, using my "Audacity app." - hope to improve)
The sun is out, the forecast for the rest of the week looks dubious. We decide to go to the Mont St Michel via lunch at Bistro Boris in Dol de Bretagne on the way. (plat du jour 7.90E). We drive, happily, across a spring-filled landscape, but we have overlooked the fact that French school holidays have only just begun. (oh the crowds!)
There is a sea of cars in the vast car park with hoards of people queuing for the shuttle bus to the Mont - which looks fantastic in the distance; but not enough to persuade us to "grit our teeth" and join the madding crowd. A wordless look at each other and Malcolm turns the car towards the exit barrier. (another day for sure - but off-peak! ) ed.
We decide to head-off to the town of Fougeres and its memorable castle- spied but not visited on a previous occasion. It seems clear of huge crowds and we "sally forth" to the entrance of the castle. (17E for two, inclusive of the technology)
Clutching brochures and personal audio guides (in English), we set off; it is spectacular, interesting and well organised. There are so many historical facts to absorb; a second visit would not go amiss. We end with a cafe-creme, sun-drenched, on the terrace of a little brasserie in the small square outside the entrance to the castle - then; home to feed the Cat, Coco Chanel.
