60 litres of Yorkshire bitter.
26th April - 60 litres of Yorkshire Bitter (OG 1.052) now fermenting!
30th April gravity reading 1032 = 2.67 abv
Not sure about the weight of hops used in total. Handful of fuggles in last minutes of the boil for aroma purposes.Too much for some people's taste?
3rd May gravity reading 1.023 = 3.87 abv
3rd May Weather cooler (14 degrees in brewery attenuation slowing ) fermenting vessel wrapped in blanket. Broken windows blocked. All seems well.
8th May 0.021. Brewery too cold at 12 degrees. Advised a good stir with a sterile spoon.
Sat. 11th May 0.018. ABV (OG) 1.052-(FG)1.018=0.034/0.0075=4.53abv Already a little too strong.
Apparent Attenuation (AA) : (OG) 1.052-(FG)1.018/(1.018-1)x 100 = 65.4% which is enough for an English ale. There may be more attenuation to come with the likely increase in ambient temperature in the brewery.
I extract 75cls of fermented wort into sealed bottle to be used for the secondary bottle fermentation liquid - rather than using spoons of sugar. I put a few table spoons of liquid gelatin in the bulk in the fermenter and stir in. Bottling to be done in two days time? taste is good but 'separate' at present and expected. No other probs. observed.
Monday 13th May. It tastes delicious, maybe a bit of residual sweetness?
Abv at 4.7%
AA 67%
Looks and feels healthy. I am encouraged and prepare to bottle tomorrow. Tuesday.
Tuesday 14th May
Bottled 20 x .75 litres = 15ltres. (fg) 1.015. Estimated abv = 4.93 This is far too strong?
Dilute remainder (approx 30 + 3.75 liquor = 33.75litres remaining) = 45 bots @ 4.4% abv AA = 72%
Perhaps we should dilute further still?
Wednesday 15th May
Bottled the rest of the diluted brew still abv 4.48% (FG) 1.014.
Result: 20 x .75 litre bots strong Yorkshire bitter + 11 bots 4.8% with yeast/sugar droplet in each.
34 bots with straight sugar priming. (1/2 a t/spoon in each.)
65 bots in total.
Monday 27th May
Large saucepan borrowed from Ann Longwell (Choir leader from Bazouge Hede)
40 litre carbon filtered water for the boil.
5 tins yorkshire bitter malt extract (not 6)
Friday 7th June
Bottled 10 'as is' at FG 1.012
Topped up fermenting vessel to the top with 20 litres filtered water.
Added gelatin cupful, gave it a stir.
Planned bottling of the rest within two or three days.
Hope to get 80 bottles at approximately less than 4% abv.
Must order some more supplies...who do I ask?
19/03/2020 No brewery activity yet this year because of the ambient temperature in the Old Mill Brewery is well below brewing temperature (ie around +19 or 20 degrees) Restarting probably in May sometime.
